Although your teacher will mark this wrong, many centuries of global climate shifts have not caused any noticeable effects on sea level. You hear stories about places on Earth which are getting swamped but if you notice all of those places are in volcanic areas - i.e. areas where the ground moves a little too. Areas with no geologic activity (i.e. New York City) have experienced no changes at all.
If a sea level increase were to actually occur, very low lying areas would be swamped, yes. You will likely live long enough to see that this whole thing was way overblown.

This is all i can tell u: global warming causes the ice caps to melt. Thus causing the sea level to rise.

The idea is that as the polar ice caps melt the ice that is currently above the water level will flow into the oceans thus raising the levels. Sorry I can't help you more than that.

much of the water on earth is "stored" as ice. a temperature increase of only a few degrees can cause cascading melting of this ice. with the influx of water from the melted ice, many islands and coastal areas would become flooded or outright submerged. the water in these stores is fresh water, as well, to a great extent (salt water has a higher freezing point, for one reason). the fresh water will cause a drop in the salinity of oceans, et al, causing fish and other marine life to die, in catastrophic numbers, and, also, allowing organisms normally kept in check by the high salt content of sea water (like some algae) to bloom, upsetting delicate ecosystems. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/04/0420_040420_earthday.html
