It is Planetology, a subclass of Astronomy. Planetologists usually have a full degree in Astronomy with a minor or even a second degree in Geology and some additional education in Climatology (the study of weather), Chemistry and Biology.


A very simple exercise in Comparative Planetology would go something like this:

The earth and Venus are almost the same mass. As such, any difference between the two of them must be attributed to the difference in their distances from the sun and any global events that took place in their past.
Likewise, the earth and the moon are the same distance from the sun. As such, any difference between the two of them must be attributed to the differences in their masses and any global events that took place in their past.
