IDF commander: We fired more than a million cluster bombs in Lebanon
By Meron Rappaport

"What we did was insane and monstrous, we covered entire towns in cluster bombs," the head of an IDF rocket unit in Lebanon said regarding the use of cluster bombs and phosphorous shells during the war.

Quoting his battalion commander, the rocket unit head stated that the IDF fired around 1,800 cluster bombs, containing over 1.2 million cluster bomblets.

In addition, soldiers in IDF artillery units testified that the army used phosphorous shells during the war, widely forbidden by international law. According to their claims, the vast majority of said explosive ordinance was fired in the final 10 days of the war.

The rocket unit commander stated that Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) platforms were heavily used in spite of the fact that they were known to be highly inaccurate.

MLRS is a track or tire carried mobile rocket launching platform, capable of firing a very high volume of mostly unguided munitions. The basic rocket fired by the platform is unguided and imprecise, with a range of about 32 kilometers. The rockets are designed to burst into sub-munitions at a planned altitude in order to blanket enemy army and personnel on the ground with smaller explosive rounds.

The use of such weaponry is controversial mainly due to its inaccuracy and ability to wreak great havoc against indeterminate targets over large areas of territory, with a margin of error of as much as 1,200 meters from the intended target to the area hit.

The cluster rounds which don't detonate on impact, believed by the United Nations to be around 40% of those fired by the IDF in Lebanon, remain on the ground as unexploded munitions, effectively littering the landscape with thousands of land mines which will continue to claim victims long after the war has ended.

Because of their high level of failure to detonate, it is believed that there are around 500,000 unexploded munitions on the ground in Lebanon. To date 12 Lebanese civilians have been killed by these mines since the end of the war.

According to the commander, in order to compensate for the inaccuracy of the rockets and the inability to strike individual targets precisely, units would "flood" the battlefield with munitions, accounting for the littered and explosive landscape of post-war Lebanon.

When his reserve duty came to a close, the commander in question sent a letter to Defense Minister Amir Peretz outlining the use of cluster munitions, a letter which has remained unanswered

Israel is indeed the only and the original terrorist on this planet.

Each time i hear people on TV trying to tell us that our only friend in the middle east is Israel, i am taken aback and remember a time before the creation of the State of Israel when we had no enemies in the middle east.

The entire gooey brown mass hit the fan when Israelites decided that after WW II then didn't want to stay in Germany, they didn't want to go to England, Canada or the U.S., but rather take away the land from Palestine. The U.S. and Britain enables this land grab and installed the State of Israel in 1949. No wonder the Arabs are pissed beyond belief. If some religious tribe from Africa was transplanted to take over Texas it would be a riot!

Israel is the enemy and they need to surrender the land to the Palestinians. They need to get out of the area and give back the land they took in a criminal act.

That's very disturbing. Not too surprising though, as I knew there had to be a plan behind all this madness. I'm sorry that some people have been so brainwashed into feeling like victims that they can't see the truth in this. The only way the illegals could understand is if this began to happen to their home countries. Still I don't think most of them would make the connection between it happening to them and to us, as they think we deserve it. We must resist the propaganda and save our country.

unfortunately in a war situation unwanted and unwarranted things happen. but when it comes to a "religious" land dispute, well forget it, especially this area it seems. anything goes, people become monsters in the name of god. maybe if we forget about god, and love thy neighbor for awhile, things might be different.

By any chance do you even know what a cluster bomb is, how it is delivered, its destructive capacity, its primary use...anything at all? Or do you just hear the word bomb and decide on your own what it means, works, does....

Or did you serve in the military and actually know anything about the questions you ask

People keep thinking that there is such a thing as a "polite" war. Bad guys want to kill you, you don't want to be killed, you do anything to keep from being killed.
If the Lebanese didn't want this to happen then they shouldn't have welcomed Hezbollah into their communities, elected them into their government, and allowed them to set up shop next to them using them as human shields.

Thank god for this question: It has finally made me realize why I differ with those of tender sentiments: They (The Gentle) want my (The western world's) gravestone to read: " He turned his other cheek"....(To get his head slapped off???)
But, to be serious for the moment, what war was won by the more humane side?

War is hell on earth. There is no picnic on the battle field. war in general causes casualty's that is the nature of the beast. if you don't want the U.S. to bring it to your neighborhood don't play the game in the first place or learn from our previous examples.
