I'm looking to get my first motorcycle. I found a 2005 V Star 650 Custom but it would be a bit small for me(I'm 6'4''). Would it be hard/possible to change the engine to an 1100?

I'm no motorcycle expert, But I have a V Star 650 classic. I think there would be frame issues. They stuffed that 650 motor into a pretty tight space. Plus I have to ask if you buying a brand new engine? Seems like overall you'd be better off just getting a new 1100 when the final bill arrives on your desk.

And, I'm 6'2, 230, and bike does very well with me on it. Buuuuut, I bought it pretty much to go to work on. I get around 50 MPG. But it would deffinately be undersized for a long trip.

Bad idea, and it doesn't even address the real problem you will have with the wrong size bike. The engine size is just fine even if you're on the heavy side - I'm well over 200 lbs and I've got a 500 cc bike that has no trouble keeping up with highway traffic. You do not need a liter to move you.

The real issue is the frame size. The usual problems with being too big for the bike are if your legs feel cramped or the handlebars hit your knees. If the handlebar is a tube that clamps to the steering head, you can often swap them out for a taller set. Cramped legs can be more of an issue - sometimes you can get forward controls that move the footpegs out a ways.

Here's a few pictures of a big guy sitting on different entry level cruisers:

Buy the 1100 bike instead of the 650. It would be more expensive buying the engine than the whole bike.

I like my 2002 v star 650 but the interstate it's lacks the extra gear so rpms are up there. The seat is okay but I would get a gel seat for long rides. Other than that it's good starter bike.

unlike sportbike, cruisers are more easy to be cutomized. as long as u have big bucks in your pocket.
