Well, Hesse was a strange man in a way, a bit lost in the world at first. In that time, a great thing appeared - Freud and his psychoanalysis. While all the Freudian psychoanalysts, and medics overall in those times were very artistic [Freud was a lot into literature, Jung used to paint], they got along the artists very easily. Jung, as a follower of Freud [for some time], formed much of his theories on Freuds theories, although they didnt agree on the thing that Freud thought as the keystone of his theories - the sexual etiology of neuroses. The majority of Freuds theories was based on the literature; the archetypes aslo appear in the theories of other freudian psychoanalytics, although it wasnt the term that Freud 'invented'.
Lets move from Freud to Jung. The reason of why seceded from 'teh dompany of Freud' was not only the sexual etiology of neuroses, but also the 'strange' theories that Jung began working on. And they all were based of somewhat spiritual things [sorry im not so well in Jung as i am in Freud]. Hesse is known for being very spiritual, you take any book of him and you find a type of religion there. He also had an inner conflict with himself as he left seminary.
Jung provided a tool for 'lost' people, which was less complicated and more acceptable to humans than Freuds theories in those times.
To summarize, a lot of writers were inspird by psychoanalysis in teh times of its rise, and used a lot of psychoanalytic ideas in their books. Now why Hesse chose specifically Jung, in my opinion was the fairy simple and somewhat spiritual theory, that was close to Hesse's thoughts.

Well, I had a lovely, thoughtful answer written and then the silly thing suddenly asked me for my password and then erased my answer! I don't know how well I can reproduce it.

I don't know Hesse that well, but I think he was influenced by Jung's central theme of archetypes. I figure that's because Jung was right.

I have read Tarot cards for over 35 years, and studied them from every angle I can think of, including reading quite a few books on the subject. The Tarot, especially the major arcana and court cards, is a pack of archetypes, prepared specifically to encompass everything that is real about being human.

I had some other wise and wonderful things to say, as I'm sure you can imagine, but the darn computer erased them!

i'm not completely antagonistic to it, i think of its kinda humorous yet I dont think of it is going to circulate on very long. ( not telling human beings which intercourse s/he's) i think of that once you're attempting too confusing to make issues impartial, you will inadvertedly commence pushing the child into the 'different' direction, just to make component to how open and impartial you're. ( like a boy towrds dolls and a woman in the direction of greater boyish issues ) i think of its cool, as long via fact the mother and dad are exposing the child into activities and toys the two sexes might like, and are ok if their lady infant seems to be a entire princess and girly lady rather of a coarse tomboy or vise versa if 'its' a boy, yet I unquestionably have a feeling that to that end, they are going to push their infant in the direction of the failings the childs opposite intercourse friends frequently get excitement from just to make a element. I additionally dont care approximately their 'parenting' too plenty particular, the place their older little ones are left to make their very own judgements of regularly each and everything, are 'unschooled' ( merely studying as they circulate, no quite training or maybe homeschooling). I recommend the different 2 are nevertheless youthful and ought to get a real training as time is going on yet any discern who 'unschools' their little ones by way of life, has some parenting subject concerns. My boys had a doll (they asked for one I have been given them one ), my olders popular colour is purple, middleones is purple, my daughter likes to play with autos and attempt against along with her brothers, i think of its significant which you're uncovered to all styles of toys and activites yet your intercourse is significant component to you and that i dont think of retaining it a key is doing all people a want. i think of you should merely take cues out of your infant, not rigidity a woman right into a gown or boy into soccer yet they're creating an improved deal approximately being impartial than desires to be.
