when you sit down, push your bum into the back of the chair, as far as it goes, and then sit back. This will sit you in a perfect posture, your back will be straight
so make sure your bum sits in first and then sit back!

when you walk always push your shoulders back

If you're getting pain just from sitting straight, you may want to get that checked out.

A really good way of improving your posture while sitting is to swap your computer chair for a swiss ball (large inflatable ball seen in gyms - looks like a space hopper with no handles). By sitting on a swiss ball you have to use all your core muscles correctly and have good posture, or you fall off!

Obviously, build up to it - ten mins on the ball, ten on the chair etc. To select the right size ball (they come in different sizes) you want to be positioned so that when sat upright and your toes, knees and hips are in line, you should have 90 degree (right angle) angle in your ankles, knees and hips. For most blokes the 65 cm ball is about right, but if you're particularly tall or short, you might need the 75 or 55.

There's a lot of exercises you can do to improve your posture, not least, simple stretching. Just getting up every 15 mins or so and stretching can make a big difference!

First you need to reply on memory, then your muscles will remember for you as your body gets used to it, then it will be second nature. Shoulders should be back, and feel like there is a piece of string pulling you from the top of your head. This will straighten your spine and push your abs in a bit. Also, when you get up out of a chair, 'think up', instead of down, and you will see how easier it is to get up. If it's that bad, have a few Alexander Technique lessons, this will cure you quickly - details on web somewhere. How long for an improvement? Sit up right now! There you go!
Buena Suerte
PS, your ears, elbows and knees should all be in line (yes, this does feel really weird at first, I know) and your weight should be eqaully on your heels and toes. If you can lift up on your toes without shifting your weight forward, this is perrrrfect!!!

Lots of people slouch because they have tight back muscles and the slouching takes pressure off them so you feel better. Freeing up your back muscles will get rid of the tightness so it will be easier to sit up straight and here's how to do that: Back: (do from a sitting position) Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side. For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Pull your chin inwards but without tipping your head down, pull your shoulders back and down, while standing as tall as possible. The rest follows on from there!
Pull in your stomach muscles slightly if you feel a strain when you sit up straight, it supports your back more.
That's what I was taught as a ballerina...
Good Luck...

Regular exercise is a great way to improve posture as it strengthens your muscles. The rowing machine is particulary good if you use the right technique as it works all muscles and pulls you in.
