With the influence she has, I think Oprah, if she hasn't already, should get a masters degree in social work, counselling or psychology. EVERYTHING she says is accepted as the gospel truth and if she gives advice, for example, to a rape victim, she should give the RIGHT kind of advice, otherwise she could end up saying the wrong thing and cause more harm than good because she IS NOT AN EXPERT or PROPERLY TRAINED in COUNSELLING SERVICES....

I never said I hated Oprah. She is popular. That doesn't make her qualified.

I am a qualified counsellor, but I only gained my qualifications because it looked good in my resume, and I only gained my qualifications because I was good at what I did. I used to work with youth and I started out as a voluteer. Even when I started I could have run rings around some of the "qualified" people who worked there. While I dont dislike or love Oprah, she has given a lot of people help and hope....shes been there and experienced a lot herself.
Personally I think Oprah is a natural....I have watched her with her guests...She doesnt give advice...she asks questions and she has the personality and the know how to bring a lot out in people....She is a natural counsellor...she doesnt need the qualifications. The guests she has in the audience are qualified psychologists, psychiatrists who she involves all the time who Oprah, I would assume would handpick herself based on getting the very best information/advice for her guests. There are some fantastic qualified people, but just as many silly qualified people. Just ask people who have had a real problem and needed counselling...I bet they could tell you exactly the same thing. Some counsellors wouldnt have an original idea if it hit them in the face....they will quote theories and models they read in a book and forget about the person they are trying to help.
Actually, when I was working as a "qualified" counsellor at a drop in centre for homeless youth, we had a psychologist on staff...an absolute ding bat.....she was the cause of one of our clients going off....her "bad" advice nearly caused a riot. So you tell me what good her "qualifications" did.....she nearly caused a lot of staff and clients to be injured. Qualifications in the wrong hands is a very dangerous thing.

I agree with you, but I guess it comes from her own personal experience, being she was molested as a child.
I know she has an honorary degree or a few of them from several universities. But, still, this doesn't make her an expert.
Also, I notice that Dr. Phil's wife, Robin is being put in the same situation on his show. I think he's using his show as a catalyst to set her up for the same situation. And I don't believe she has a degree in any one of those you've mentioned, either.
This can be dangerous, yes. I totally agree with you.

Picture "Oprah" in a brown uniform with a tight Afro, and "Traffic" printed on her shoulder patch giving out parking tickets, That's the real Oprah ! how many tons a year can a person lose, If I had personal chefs/trainers watching my a$$, I'd be able to lose 100 lbs a year too

well she does her research on her guests before she meets with them. Plus she gives common sense advice. And thats all it is advice and encouragement.
I've seen her offer counseling. She doesn't have a degree in counseling, but everyone who watches her is very attentive to what she is saying. I have been trained in therapy and i think its up to those who watch to take it for what it is (a talk show) and go get help if they really need it.
Please don't hate, I actually like Oprah. Who doesn't :)

Well, she gives common sense advice, but she also has professionals on the show with her. If you ever watch a show where she has victims on, there is always a certified professional either in the front row or on the couch with them. I have never seen her give flat out advise on her own, she usually backs up whatever information the doctor/lawyer/ certified person is giving.

Zip, Zero, Nada. It is true, she is not the know all authority on many matters she discusses. She may have researchers that inform her, but that does not give her license to address some of her guests the way in which she does. I don't dislike her either, I just feel she has gotten a bit to big for her britches.

yea your talking about Oprah a living icon! And yes her word will be gold cause she owns the show and half the people running it.She is one of the wealthiest women in the world and believe me being a black poor women from Tennessee and having what she does now takes a real genius no dummy could accomplish that task. And people know this and they think she must be very smart so they listen.I agree that everything she says isn't the gospel and shouldn't be wrote in stone but hey its her show and in her show she is god!!

Life experience! It far outways book knowledge in the people department. You need experience not training to know how to relate to people. Besides, she's giving you her opinion from her life experiences. To me, most of what she says is common sense; you can't teach common sense. Stop player hating and do something to enlight and uplift the world.
