If you go Toyota, get their versions of the SUV or pickups. It is possible to work on Toyotas but the utility variety let you take off the damaged assembly without having to take off all the pumps, compressors and etc. that the sedans have all crammed on top of the engine. Me? I'll stick with the V6 Chevy pickup and do most of my own repairs.

GM products are currently very good! people have the mindset that Toyota is the best (a lot also think M. Benz is great also, maybe years ago but look at the reliability now). Yes Toyota makes a quality vehicle (I even own one). But do some research and see what GM has done lately, the quality and fuel mileage and customer satisfaction ratings have all gone up very well.
In 2005 Toyota recalled more vehicles than it sold! Some of their top executive have been replaced for hiding recalls.
You should pick models and do research as with every manufacturer they all make models that are very good and some that aren't. GM announced that all of the 2007 models will have a 5 year 100k power-train warranty that includes roadside assistance and courtesy transportation. They can offer this because their quality in power-trains has gone up tremendously (were rated as the highest by JD Powers in long term). Do some good research then make an educated choice.

Honda Toyota and Subaru are all real good they will keep going just about forever. if you decide to go with an SUV Isuzu is great to just be careful it's not a Chevy with an Isuzu emblem like Ascender or Hombre. If you live where there's a lot of snow go for the all wheel drive Subaru.

Hondas have a well earned reputation for lasting into the 200,000-300,000 mile territory with little problem.

I've heard more people say their Honda rusted out before the engine quit.
