Is the baby fed dry and healthy? Always keep an eye on the baby and out for danger. The doors of the place should be locked. The environment should be babyproofed. toys should be safe for the baby to handle. that means stuffed animal buttons should be sewn on with NO chance of being pulled off an popped in the mouth and they should be clean! anyone who comes to the door should be checked out with the following questions: who are you (put politely) what is your business here? and obviously you need to evaluate the answers. DON'T take the baby off the property without the parents explicit permission if you are not the parent. The job of a parent is to know where their child is at all times. If the parent is expected to walk in while you are not there, and you are taking the child to a nearby playground, leave a note where you are going. same thing with a stroller ride. I personally don't answer the telephone and prefer to have the parents call my cell phone. some will have their machine pick it up and holler for me if it's for me. This cuts down on me having to take a message. It's less for me to do. Answering the phone takes away from the baby. If The baby cries, check first if the baby needs to be changed. Yes it's nasty but it needs to be done. If that is in order, How long has it been since he has been fed? is he sick? does he need medicine? and then sometimes babies just want to be held and sang to. If you are just starting out babysitting you are going to have to get used to it. learn a few soothing songs and don't let it freak you out because the baby WILL pick up on that an then it starts a vicious cycle that will not end! Don't forget about the pacifier. Some parents will let you use them all the time, tohers will not. the baby may be looking for it so always have one handy. the baby might prefer your thumb (my niece did.) The most important thing is to make the baby the focus and not anything else. Tune into the baby and try to anticipate the baby's needs. assuming all needs have been met and the baby is not crying, it's PLAYTIME!!! This is what makes the job fun!!!! you can teach these little guys and gals stuff! They LOVE Peekabooo! Well, the oldest crowd doesn't, but you can find age appropriate stuff online and figure out stuff. Most of the under 1 crowd loves facial expressions and loves to look around at new things. and they love to babble. talk to them like they are adults. then they babble. say, Oh really, like you actually understood. another good phrase is, "I didn't know that. I like to lean in and say, "go on." and actually look like Im fascinated by what they have to say. another good one is. "you don't say" accompanied by a shake fo the head. they just laugh and giggle and are totally amazed. by this. especially by age 7 months. they also like to hear "and then what happened?" they are impressed by this for at least 30 minutes at a time.

Babies need attention. They cry because they need a diaper change, if their tushy hurts because of diaper rash, if they are hungry, if they need to burp, when they are in pain, or just want some attention.
