Sounds like a virus attack, have a strong antivirus and anti spyware, run a scan, remove all of the viruses and spyware. That should work. If it doesn't try re-installing the copy of Windows. That will defenitely work.
Good luck.

your computer is either damaged or infected by Spywares/Virus.
since you use Xp Pro you could try the "System Restore" To restore your whole PC to previous time/Day.
Step 1 - Start
Step 2 - All Programs
Step 3 - Accesories
Step 4 - System Tools and Choose System Restore.
Or You could Try scanning your computer for Virus/Spyware.
if you dont have antiSpyware you could check the website below for free antivirus/antiSpyware.
For the Last Resort you could try reformatting your Desktop, but don't forget to Back Up your Data.

Hope that helps and Good luck.

if you havent recently installed any new cards or drivers etc recently ...then I would look initially if the computer is overheating .....take the side off the computer and carefully run it .....is there lots of dust inside - also check if all the fans are running .....

the next i would suspect would be virus/malware ....run your computer in safe mode and turn off system restore then run several diffferent types of anti virus programmes .......if this picks nothing up
check your ram memory with a free programme called memtest ...to make sure you memory sticks are functioning

...just a few suggestions ...but it could be a number of things ..really
