as an architect student, i should answer like this:

"it should b simple in diagrams (not 2 much complicated)... achieving the requested goals of its purpose... containing a design concept relted 2 the nature of the building itself (or the surrounding environment)...

also... it should b sutainable... & made of well studied material...

it should reflect the personality of the owner of the building... along with the architect who designed it...

it must consider the budget... & have the minimum requierments of design...

don't 4get that it must b a continuity 2 the city (or surrounding area) skyline... & not some building making a stong impact of distortion...

check out francis ching's book: "architecture; form, space, & order" 4 more info about that...

oh... y not, check out the works of these famouse architects...
1. Mario Botta.
2. Sir Norman Foster.
3. Herman Hitzberger.
4. Santiago Calitraza.
5. Jean Novel.

thats what i can remember right now... good luck with ur design! :)

Contemporary architecture, a personality of its own(yes even the buildings exude personality, of course of the architect), effective use of space - both vertical and lateral, environmentally friendly, effectively mingling with the eco system surrounding it, are some of the hallmarks of a modern building in my opinion.
