If you give them the proper tank size (20g for the first fish then 10g per additional fish), clean the water, monitor chem levels, etc. you can get quite a few years from them (I'm talking 20-25 years).
I had two that lived for 8 years before they passed (stupid well-city move) and one that is 9 years old right now but is suffering from swim bladder disease because I was stupid.

a long time ago my son won a goldfish playing a game at our county fair. we didn't expect it to live long enough to get home. it lived 14 years. we bought goldfish at a pet shop with a 72 hour guarantee and they never survived longer than 30 minutes. i guess each goldfish is different.

In the right conditions goldfish can live to be 20 years old.It just depends.

hey mr. goldfish my goldfish are really healthy, big tank, clean water, nice filter, small stones, large and small plants and loads of water features = 10 years. they are comet fish by the way
