Now we've got these 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 dishwasher tablets which claim to contain salt, does it mean we can do away with the kind of dishwasher salt that comes in a big plastic bag?

No, I don't live in the USA. Where I live, I used to have to add salt to the dishwasher from time to time as a water-softener because we've got hard water here (water with a high mineral content). Now, I can buy dishwasher tablets that claim to contain the detergent, rinse aid and salt. In the past, I had to add these to the dishwasher separately. I'm happy with these 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 tablets but not sure if this means I'll never have to use salt again (it's fiddly to add salt to my machine). Thanks for all the answers I get so far.

Are you in the USA? I never heard of "dishwasher tablets" nor putting salt in the dishwasher.

I do know that salt is used as a water softener though, but I also know that it wears away your metal pipes.

This isn't an answer really, more of a question...
what the heck is dishwasher salt? Do you live in the US? I have never heard of that before.

I'm now on dishwasher no 3 (due to house moves, not faulty appliances) and have never used salt. It just seems hassle and an added expense.

No, as nowadays the 3 in 1 tablets etc. have salt added.
Unless you don't use the tablets ...

you are better off putting salt in with normal dash washer liquid, as the suppliers are selling you salt at detergent prices when you buy the all in one.

plus the different types of water may require different quantities of salt to acheive the desired result.

Unfortunately not. You won't have to use it as often, but it's like shampoo and conditioner one is not as good as the two seperately.
