Time Magazine did a big piece on it a few years ago, and it's all a big con started by L. Ron Hubbard. Yet so many people like Tom Cruise actually believe in it and try to brainwash other people.
In the Time Magazine article, it said that some Scientologists even go after people that leave the cult and go tell the truth about it.
What planet did people like Tom Cruise and John Travolta come from?

They are ill informed, naive and looking for something desperately. Scientology is not the "study of science" as the title would indicate. Tom Cruise did a HUGE disservice to those who are mentally ill. His BS about having done the research really tics me off. Tell you what Tom, you get a PhD in psychology and then you can speak. IDIOT.

The same reason muslims don't realize Islam is a cult, the same reason Christians don't realize Christianity is a cult, the same reason Catholics don't realize Catholocism is a cult, see where this is going? Good, all religions are cults, the original word cult meant religious pratice,or a cohesive group devoted to certain beliefs or practices. Just because you are the group in power and choose to deny the origin of the word so you can use it to label others as different somehow does not change the fact. All religions are groups of people bound together by certain beliefs or religious practices and therefore cults, just because one set of beliefs based on ancient myths is more popular does not make it any better than some new set of myths. Scientology is weird, most don't know the half of it,but some once thought Christianity was weird, who's to say in 2000 years their won't be as many scientologists as christians.

Ok I believe in religious freedom. That said, Scientology is a really F' ed up religion and it is totally a cult. Tom cruise and john travolta just operate on the fringes of society anyway, so why shouldn't they believe is such messed up stuff. I mean Tom Cruise bought a sonagram machine and John Travolta owns like a gazillion jets. they're just crazy.

People are pretty stupid about cults. You can't tell them anything, they will just have to find out when they die. It's sad, but people are so lost and they think that these cults can give them meaning. Tom Cruise and John Travolta are very educated, they just lost their minds when all that fame went to their heads.

for starters you seem to imply thru your wording that a cult is inescapably a scam.. that is not necessarily so.. and while I don't feel any need to defend Scientology, I am not sure whether people need to make decisions based on what Time magazine wrote about a topic...and to adress the key issue of your questions I would say that people ultimately join groups out of specific interest for their activities, and not because the group is (or is not) a scam

It has been said that they're being blackmailed into it.

That, and celebs' stick their brains in plastic jars and hand them off to their agents.
