For Viper's answer.. I don't think that's it.. this character has some sort of significance to Mahone.. and apparently he hated him quite a bit. I imagine this Shale character has been mentioned before because I have even seen his name in viewer's recaps.. I have no idea why I can't remember him if this is the case.

"Shale" is a previous Prison Escapee that Mahone was responsible for finding and never did. So :Shale" is like "the one that got away".

I don't remember seeing him before but I think he is the reason that Mahone takes those pills. You know, that guy that gave him so much trouble maybe caused trauma in Mahone's life. I'm sure we will find out about in the coming weeks.
