there is a difference between promoting one religion over another and respecting the religion that helped began the country...i think if you do not see the difference you are just blinded with hatred toward religion...i think the systimatic rape of Christianity from liberals needs to come to a stop...what happened to tolerance and respect for others that liberals demand but never give.
when they mention God in the Constitution and other documents it does NOT refer to Allah, Budda, or any other religious God other than the Judeo-Christian God...there were no muslims, buddists, etc...there were however Christian religious groups who disagreed on how to worship and serve God. what is wrong with the 10 commandments in front of the court house...if you don't like it you don't have to read it...no one forces you to read it...when did the offensiveness of 1% become more important of the 99% who don't care it is there...what happen to respecting American culture and it heritage...

as much as I do agree that Christians are always on the defensive, I think that more laws is not the correct solution. A law protecting faith will open the flood gates for all others, including cults, polygamy, and every other extremist which is also on the defensive. We as Christians need to rise above it.

We are better than this, and we should lower ourselves to our enemies level.

First, if you've ever bothered to read the Constitution, it doesn't mention God at all. Not once. So, your initial premise is flawed.

In fact, the only two references to religion at all are in Article VI and the 1st Amendment, both prohibiting the governmetn from being entangled with any religion. Any religion.

Second, this country was not founded on Christian values. Most of the Framers were Deists, which is why Christianity doesn't appear in either the Declaration of Independent nor the Constitution. The referece in the Declaration to "Nature's God" was a Deist reference to the concept of God, not the God of Christianity. So, you're 0 for 2 so far in your assumptions.

Third, the concept of seperation of church and state has been recognized by the Supeme Court as a founding principle of this country for 130 years. Twice as long as "under God" has been in the pledge. And what part of "Congress shall make NO LAW respecting the establishment of religion" makes you think that it's acceptable for the govt to endorse Judeo-Christianity over other faiths?

Finally, you point out the exact reason why the Framers forbid religious endorsement of any kind. Because the majority should NOT be allowed to impose their religion on the minority. And if you think having the 10 Commandments in front of court houses and city halls doesn't do that, how would you feel if the only symbols allowed were Islamic or Buddhist or Pagan? What if you were in the 15%-20% that wasn't Christian (BTW, your 1% is way off, so 0 for 3). Or what if only 10% was Christian? Is it still OK for the majority religion to enforce their beliefs against yours?

Heritage is not something that changes - it is part of the hsitory of a place or group of people.

Even if the government forces everyone to become Unitarians it will not change the fact that the modern America was built by those who proclaimed to be Christian.

Instead you should be more scared of the fact that governments are 'editing' history to remove of things they are not fond of.

Slavery is a fact. Genocide is a fact. These are in our history and we should not forget how horrid people can be to each other rather than brush it over with a pretty whitewash (pun intended).

Oh, here we go. Another conservative blinded by what? Ignorance. First off, there's no mention of god in the constitution, but of course, conservatives (like George Bush) aren't fond of reading, so how could they know? Get your facts straight. "Creator" (not "god"), is mentioned in the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, NOT IN THE CONSTITUTION!!!!. The Constitution is the basis of our laws, NOT the Declaration of Independence.
Also, did you ever read the "Treaty of Tripoli", 1796-'97? Well here's part of it (Article 11):

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

"Mussulmen" means "Muslims" and " Mahometan" means "Muhammad". Don't believe me? LOOK IT UP!!!
So, genius, what do you think of our "Christian heritage" now?

That would run counter to what the found father's wanted. Probably the best sentiment on that issue was written by George Washington to the Jewish congregation of Touro Synagogue in Newport, RI he said "the Government of the United States, which gives to biogotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protections should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it all occassions their effectual support."

I always thought the meaning was to protect people from religious persecution. Not to prohibit people from believing as they choose. If the government wants to put up a holiday tree than fine. But I will put up a Christmas tree. No one and no law will ever keep me from my God.

Why should it? It seems that the christian block is doing a fine job of proctecting its own interests.

The only western countries that are even more christian than USA is Poland and the Vatican., so, I think it is pretty preserved, all right.

America has produced George Bush, Charles Manson, Marilyn Monroe, transvestite hookers, Criss Angel, Marilyn Manson, Amy Lee, Christian Fundamentalists, and terrorists. What would be the cultural heritage you are trying to protect here?
