This site offers a good list of programs that are required, that might be viruses/spywares, and that safe but not necessary.

Well one method to decrease the number of programs that startup when you boot your computer would be configuring the programs.

Follow this method:
1) Go to Start > Run > type MSCONFIG

2) The "System Configuration Utility" window should be open now. Select the tab "Startup". Over there, there'll be a listing of programs that run once you boot your computer. De-select the ones you find non-useful.

3) Should you realise that there's some weird *.exe file that doesn't look like anything you've installed within your computer, you might be affected with spyware. At which point I would recommend you to download a spyware killer... something as good as Pervx1 ( http://front.prevx.com/ )

Try this but u need some knowledge about the programs that will be running at the background.

control panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services

there u can see the list the programs that has the startup type set to automatic( automatically starts on booting ), manual (starts when user runs the application first time ).

try to change the startup type of app. to manual which are not necessary to be started at booting time.

I go to RUN on the start menue and type MSCONFIG, from there you have startup and a sevices tab, chose things like your cd burning software, only do one at a time and reboot each time to see the differences, push ctrl-alt-del and at the bottom of the processes tab you will see the number of services runnning. A machine with more then 40 services running at boot is probly infected with spyware/adware etc...

I called the company that makes my computer, while I still had a warrenty and a nice person there told me which ones to uncheck
it is pretty much the same since then
I only have 8 checked out of about 22
you can write them and google each on and it will tell you about it
for example I got rid of
qttask
RealPlay
msmsgs
setup
hptasks
carpserv
smrclean
cpqset
Ati2mdxx
atiptaxx
One Touch
well that is a few
i have had it this way for 3 years
