I was really depressed when John Candy died. I know, he had it coming with how horribly he took care of himself, but I grew up watching his movies starting in the 80's, and he always made me laugh.
***EDIT***
Ok, who's the moron that just goes around and gives thumbs down votes on answers like this? You don't like John candy or something so you vote down my answer? God, get a clue

Colin Thiele...author of Storm Boy, Sun On The Stubble plus over 80 other books. He has been read by almost every school kid in Australia, and loved by most of them. The impact is basically because...he died the same day as Steve Irwin, yet the media totally ignored him. On any scale of Great Aussies, Colin Thiele is streets ahead of both Steve Irwin and Peter Brock. He did more for this country than both of them put together. If anyone rated a State funeral, and/or a mention in Parliament it was Colin, yet even the PM (who should know better) ignored his death.
Upon learning of Colin death, everyone (old & young alike) has felt the shock and loss. Even the Brock/Irwin fans.

Pope John Paul II. It scared me to think that we lost the greatest diplomate there is. He transcended religions and different nations, and united the world with universal love. I hope our new Pope can keep up the good work.
On second is Princess Diana's. I would have loved to meet my future mother-in-law in person:p Seriously, I feel so sorry for her, for her failed marriage and unhappiness inside the palace. She was a very simple person for a princess, a good role model, a powerful woman who used her abilities to help and inspire unfortunate people. Yet how her life ended was tragic. We lost a muse.

Marvin Gaye.
He was the voice of Black struggle, maybe the voice of the human condition in the 70's and early 80's. His music was powerful and still speaks to whats going on. The circumstances surrounding his death were tragic.

Dale Earnhardt. I was a big fan of his. I was watching on TV when he had his wreck. I saw the ambulance take him away. It didn't look good. Then an hour or so later I saw on the internet where he had died. It was so surreal. I guess it hit me hard because he was a man's man, he was so cool. Everyone thought he would live forever. But, when it's your time, it's your time.
I know alot of people cried and took it much harder than I did. I was a fan, but not to that extreme. It wasn't like I knew him personally, but of all celebrity deaths, his hit me the hardest.

The highest impact on me was the death of Aaliyah. Because she was very young and I liked her music.

Pedro Zamora from Real World on Mtv(I forget what season)
He handled his life with dignity and grace. He made people look AIDS in the face, and make it real for everyone who watched.
He is just one of millions who have passed away from it,and it nakes me realize how many more will have it.
I hope there can be a cure.

John Lennon. Because he was the greatest songwriter ever. And because he was one of the freakin' BEATLES. His death still makes me sad, 26 years later. That was one of those moments that you'll always remember where you were when it happened.
