Apart from it being useless and therefore totally unecessary, it has been linked to eye problems if worn too tight and of course it is a safety hazard if working near operating machinery.
Is there a more useless fashion accessory than the tie?

They cramp your style and hinder doing your job in a relaxed and productive manner. However, a suit without a tie looks a bit empty. Someone has to invent a scarf thingy or some loose fitting decoration.

I note the women who have attempted to answer the question have missed the point completely.
It evolved from what was effectively a napkin or bib, when people tended to be messy eaters
It has no practical point these days and should be banned, as should that other dreadful thing the Lounge Suit!

well if u don't wear a tie with a suit it doesn't look nice at all. so i wouldn't say its useless.
