Since when child I was an unskilled player, to have my place as worthless defender in the starting primary school line-up my only tools were sacrifice, willingness, determination, maximum care in positioning, readiness in spotting pass to break opponent's play... really an hard task. Now, looking back in the past, I'm wondering why I felt this as the greatest entertainment I ever had, but when I was playing since the kick-off I was so proud... Glory days!!!
Never dreamed to be a forward, my heroes were:
Giuseppe 'Furia' (Fury) Furino, a short and bald center defensive midfielder, ever moving and fighting on every ball. Quotes from Wiki 'With Ciro Ferrara and Giovanni Ferrari, he's the player who has won more italian championships. He has been the team captain of Juventus for over 10 years being considerated the real "heart and soul" of the Black and white side in the '70.
His nickname was "Furia" (The Fury), due to his impressive struggle and stamina in playing.'
Later, in the middle of '70s, Claudio Gentile, the known right defender (one of all time best in this role in my own ranking) who marked Maradona on 1982 WC - quotes from Wiki - 'There are many humorous stories involving Gentile within the footballing world. One is that during the Ballon d'Or (European Footballer of the Year) awards ceremony in the late 1970s English centre forward Kevin Keegan was announced as the winner. As Keegan walked towards the host to collect his award he passed the seat where Gentile was sitting. As Keegan walked past Gentile is reported to have stuck out his foot and tripped up Keegan. As Keegan was getting to his feet Gentile reputedly whispered into his ear, "You wouldn't have won any award if I had been marking you".'
and next the famous Marco Tardelli, midfielder, another 1982 WC winner. Quotes from Wiki 'Tardelli - at his peak one of the hardest men in European football - was a midfield workhouse renowned for his ferocious tackling. His commitment could not be questioned and he boasted a competitive streak second to none'
You let me remember my dreams ;-)
