Interesting question, but I am afraid the real success of India has depended entirely on it's peoples ability to adapt to world cultures and economies. The British pretty much forced them to learn adaptation by proxy a long time ago.
The government is actually rather weak and difficult to manage, but the people remain adaptable and quick to take advantage of a potential opportunity. This, to me, has been their greatest strength in the last 40 - 50 years.

i agree with u its really the strength of india otherwise india should have gone for the rule for another 100 yrs. as this simplicity has a great power which bapu found in himself. that we indian have .

india has strength in its population size...& nothing else.
people there are dying....commiting suicide.....selling their children to brothels....etc
