A very difficult one - I feel there is a place for it when used in medical research - BUT it must be ethical, strictly controlled and where possible as kind and painless as possible and if it's not necessary as there is already a drug out there then it should not be done.
It should NEVER be done for cosmetics or any other reasons like perfume, shampoo's etc etc and should NEVER cause undue pain and suffering - we have enough medication and perfumes in the world..... for research into diseases that have no cure maybe?
And as for all those people out there who really are vicious and vindictive such as animal rights extremists - they need to make sure that they take no medications at all EVER, nor their families or friends, have never ever bought or had anything to do with any product or service that involves leather, animal cruelty or testing and are VEGANS not just vegetarians but vegans, nuts and pulses only I'm afraid for your guys. And don't you ever try to tell me that if you were ever put in a position that if it was you or your family that needed one of these drugs that was tested on animals to save your lives you wouldn't take it! Still think no - well lets hope your never put in that position................

I suppose we could use people, but many are overweight, and unequal sizes and they do make a lot more noise and we would probably be fined for noise pollution. Various animals are used because we can produce standard sized animals with known ages, and free from pathogens, we know their diet, etc. so all tests can be equal and we can replicate the results. Without monkeys, the world would have had many victims of polio, and horses produce the majority of anitvenines. All the research passes through many stages and the use of animals for testing comes during the later stages of development. No abuse is intended, but simply the animals help us to reach a stage where human volunteers can be used. That removes many faulty medications from possible use. However inspite of all of our efforts, products are sold that still have side-effects as animals are not the same as people. Prisoners sometimes volunteer as test subjects but we often find that they are not good subjects... Think of the animals in a different light....you can spare a mouse today and die from something preventable tomorrow.

I think they should test on convicted criminals...... that way they would be punished for thier crimes and the innocent animals would be left alone. Either that or ask those people who are so concerned with these drugs saving peoples lives to volunteer to be tested on themselves....
Right now there is nothing I can do about animal testing but someday things will be set right and people will realize we dont even need half the drugs the pharmaceutical companies are producing and testing on animals. Humans will accept death as a part of life and people will stop inflicting pain and torture on animals to prolong thier own life...

Some animal research is for the betterment of the animal kingdom to save the species, however, I believe you are talking about the research "shops". Those, I agree with you, should be stopped.

I think animal research is cruel and plain out heartless, because what did those animals ever do to deserve to die like that or live in a different way.

Animal research is barbaric. They are our equals, not small pitiful beings to be ordered and used at our will. What if elephants or even dogs, cats, etc. were the ones testing their inventions and concoctions on us. In my opinion, our inventions should tested on volunteers in prison for life or really long sentences. Either that or test them on people who volunteer for money.

HELP END CRUEL ANIMAL TESTING!!!

animal research should probably be banned, or there should at least be strict guidlines to protect the animals quality of life. At this point its causing more suffering than its helping. and most of the experiments are done for drugs which only treat symtpoms and don't help the real problem of the patients, and the drugs themselves cause health problems, so it ends up hurting the animals and poeple, and the drug companies get rewarded with money for doing this.

Animal research is essential to the development of many products, particularly pharmaceuticals. Without such research, people would die who might otherwise live.
