Several theories, including that Judas was the 13th disciple; that it's a prime number and they were always suspect; 12 is regarded as the "perfect" number, and it's one past that.

One correct answer was given but there are three main reasons why 13 is considered unlucky. One: according to christianity there were 13 people at the last supper. Two: according to Norse pantheism there were 13 people at the feast the day Baldr died. Whichever of these two beliefs is correct the third reason has been historically proven and that is that the Mideavel gallows had 13 steps leading up to the platform. This is also how the term "walking under a ladder" came about. The condemned man would be led under the ladder and then up it so in fact his days would become sadder.

I think it is all about superstition.

Anyway, every culture doesn't give the same meaning for number "13".

I live in France, and here, "13" is considered as a very auspicious number. Lots of French ppl buy lottery-tickets each day-13 because they believe that they will be very lucky.

There are special lotteries each day-13 in France.

But there are also lots of French ppl who feel a bit scared by each "friday 13th": not auspicious at all, in their view.

It's only a question of superstition, whether "13th" is auspicious or not.

But just remember that many superstitious ppl consider "13th" as a very auspicious sign.

You might want to read up on numerology if you're really interested. Of course, the unlucky connotations with the number 13 could have come from a number of different sources, which have already been explained.

It's all superstition, though. I mean, I turned 13 on Friday Oct. 13, on a full moon! I didn't keel over and die, so it can't be all that bad.

Back before Christianity started, many pagans used to meet. They were generally in the number of 13. Then the church came along and wiped them out, told everyone that 13 was extremely unlucky. Same thing with black cats.
