I have a notebook and a desktop and instead of constantly having to relly on a memory stick to transfer files and info from one to the other, I would like to know if I can use FTP instead.

The 2 machines are right next to each other on the same desk, they are connected via a lan Hub and share an internet connection and a single modem.

How can I get this working simply?

Thanks

if your concern and objective is just to transfer files from two computers easily, you don't need an FTP server... have the computers belong to the same workgroup (network) together...

then select any folder you want to share files with, and right-click that folder, click SHARING and security... then check your desired options.. after it is setup go to NETWORK PLACES and find/browse the selected SHARED folders (that you just allowed) and transfer files...

if you wanna use an FTP server, there are some sites that offer these services like drivehq.com

As long as internal network using TCP/IP is up, you can use FTP, the instructions using FTP servers are there with each software you choose to use. Of course you need to know the IP address of each other within the home router for this.

you have to be running an ftp daemon (built in to all unix machines, downloadable on windoze).

then you can ftp to your new 'ftp server'

stick transfer is little better than floppies!

when I need a quick transfer, I just IM the file across!

To share files and folders on your computer
Moving or copying a file or folder to Shared Documents makes it available to anyone who has a user account on your computer.

Open My Documents.
Click the file or folder that you want to share.
Drag the file or folder to Shared Documents in Other Places.

I think you can enable print and file sharing on both the computers, if they are able to detect each other on the network.
