He is bright and intelligent with 9 x GCSE's and 3 A levels. He worked part time stacking shelves when at uni and now does this job full time to pay his way. He needs a better job but does not know what he wants to do. Who can he (or we) talk to to get him out of this and find something more rewarding? It needs to be paid work, with prospects. He is hard working and does not smoke, take drugs, or drink excess alcohol.

Constructive responses from the UK more than welcome.

This is coming from the US...uni is uni, right?

Without the degree, choices are limited.
Even with the degree, choices can be limited, but less so.

Is he good at anything mechanical, electrical? He could go to a trade school and do machinist, plumbing, electrical, welding, etc.

He will probably have to go to some kind of school, else the job market may be limited to painting, construction, etc.

By the way, he is only 21. I know several guys have have earned their masters degrees, and still just stock shelves or bum off of friends so that they can enjoy life yet.

Relax...as long as he is a hard worker, and clean, you should be a proud pop. As my mom (mum?) always says: everything always works out.

The most important thing is the social support, and it sounds like you have that covered. Let him grow and learn on his own. At the same time, if he is living at home, I hope you are collecting rent from him!

until he figures out what he wants to do with his life, he might as well drop out because he's wasting money on college. but get him some help to figure out what he wants to do in life based on what his personality is. they have tests that he can take to see where he would be best suited.

my line of work takes me into many different kinds of businesses. i recommend to young men to get their hvac/mechanical/plumbing apprenticeship done. with no college they'll be making $50/year and up, plus benefits.
