Hi - For my first baby I bought all new clothes. I didn't know anyone to get hand-me-downs from and wasn't familiar with second hand stores in my area. I did purchase a few items on Ebay and Craigslist that would have been much more expensive new. It depends on the utility of the piece. A dress to wear once or twice can be used if you find one you like. Something that will be worn frequently might be best new because the previous owner probably used it a lot too, and sometimes zippers and buttons get worn. For my second baby, I have gotten a few other used things and saved a bit of money. The baby didn't seem to mind! :-) The outfit for his Christmas pics was from Ebay - totally cute -and cost $15. Babies grow fastest the first year, but toddlers can be hard on clothes when they are playing. You also will find that after they potty train some of their last season's clothes will fit again because there's no more bulky diaper! Hurray! Buying ahead from the clearance rack at K-Mart, Target, and WalMart saves money too. KMart clearance is always so cheap. Nothing wrong with popping into Gymboree outlet or one of the nice baby shops now and then for something special. Also, go to garage sales in upscale neighborhoods! Jeans are hard to find in the summer, but WalMart carries them toward the fall if they don't have them now. Be careful about buying too much before baby's born, because you don't know what size you are starting with. I always keep a few items that are 6 months or 9 months further ahead - especially sleepers. It seems like all of a sudden they grow out of things and you don't want to have to run out and suddenly buy 10 new things. Keep a few reserves up to about 18 months. I hope this helps! Best wishes!
