To me personally, I know that I should be a woman. I have even been sent to evaluate my mental illness. Should I feel bad? Or can I look into a sex change without the guilt of disappointing the people that are close to me?

I guess at this point, you don't need to worry about what other people think. It is important that you feel okay with yourself. Do what you need to do and be happy.

The reason it's still in the "big book of mental illnesses," and the reason that I think it should stay in there for now with a few changes to the text, is that the illness part is just the mental pain that's caused by being in that situation. As for the change, remember that the change is about YOU. It's not about anyone else, even your family. It's about you doing what you have to to be able to live a happy, healthy life without the constant pain from "being in the wrong body." Other people will tell you it's wrong for other reasons, but they're being close-minded and probably misquoting the bible. You should not feel bad about being transgender. In fact, you should consider yourself lucky. Most people live very mundane lives and never take the time to think outside the box. You an opportunity to see the world through a whole different perspective. For many of us, transition is a struggle, but at the end we're much stronger people for having done it.

Currently, Gender Identity Disphoria is listed as a mental illness. There's talk about excluding it from the next DSM, but only time will tell. Whether it's an "illness" or not, there is a lot of evidence supporting biological causes. The "treatment" for the "illness" is to indeed make sure that you are certain about your gender identity, and then do what it takes to make you feel that your body properly reflects that. I'd encourage continuing to see whoever you went to for evaluation; someone properly trained can help you figure out how (or if; not everyone wants to) you want to approach transitioning etc.

"Gender Dysphoria" is noted as a disorder, only because it indicates that a person is suffering based upon their gender and body not matching. It is not considered some terrible illness in itself, only that the person needs help to find a way to happiness as everyone deserves. To some, it means the process that leads to an actual sex change. I have known others who accept that their sex is opposite of what the body is, yet they are content staying as they are and expressing themselves through their relationships in a positive way.
I find that transsexuals are people of great courage, whether they chose the sex change or not. I respect them very much, and they have taught me a deeper level of acceptance, both of myself and others. Do some soul searching and find what the best path is for you. People who do not support you are simply shallow or not your true friends.

No don't feel bad. It falls under mental illness because it's causing you distress, not because your sick or anything like that.

I have a friend who is going through FtoM right now. There are people out there who love you and support you.

Hang in there, and be who you are meant to be. If that means being a woman then be a woman.

i have been reading a females's study direction e book and that i found the feminist view on transsexuality really perplexing. The argument develop into that it elements info that sex and gender might want to be separated... that your actual body would not consistently tournament the way you sense on your mind. yet i theory this develop into style of lacking the point. Transsexuality shows that this is achieveable to sense male or woman... some human beings will bypass by sex substitute operations in basic terms so their body can tournament the way they sense on the interior. To me, it in basic terms delivers info that the brains of exact men and females might want to be inherently diverse. it really is a tricky issue because the motives of transsexuality have not been totally said or defined yet. i have even heard the view that transsexuality in basic terms exists because of socialised gender roles... because of being informed that particular features are male or woman. (Which I also do not believe.)

your not sick,it's not an illness, it's who your are, and nature is not aways right. there are phycial tests that will confirm this,on the thalmus gland. if you are a women than what body your in makes no difference, you ARE a women,it will be easier to change your sex and feel whole, but even if you don't enjoy the journey

If you are sure you're transsexual, you'll regret not changing while you're still young if you keep waiting.

Why would you feel bad for others? They should feel bad for you. You're the one suffering, not them.

If you're married, your marriage will most likely end. Your wife is the only person you can honestly feel bad for. For anyone else, it's really not their business. Even your parents.

One other thing. You're right, it is an illness. The only known cure is transitioning.

this is the kind of crap that annoys me, sheriff leane!

this person is asking for some help and advice and you come on spouting religious clap trap!

it's not an illness mate, it's do to with the level and variation of hormones you receive as a foetus. it changes your sexual viewpoint so if you receive more than normal oestrogen then your body will naturally be more feminine with female like brain-waves etc.

sheriff leane, does that mean that gay monkeys and penguins etc, are against gods natural law when they have no concept of god or gayness? grrrr....

I'd look for transgender support groups in your immediate area. Is there a gay lesbian community center near you? Look in the gay publications in your area. Also I look for some people that council for sex change surgeries.
