I saw a program on the history channel I think. Archeologists think that both Nearderthal and homo sapiens did indeed exist at the same time. And yes, they did compete for the same resources. I believe the archaeologists latest theory is that homo sapiens were more versatile and could plan to bring down game through team work and their wits, rather than through brute force, which is how they think Neanderthals hunted. Why Neanderthals went extinct is not clear. They may just have been unable to adapt to something that changed in their enviroment, or homo sapiens multiplied faster and hunted more of the game, etc.

Homo Sapiens and Neanderthals are not related but 2 distinct species so they would not have intermarried. DNA tests so far show too many differences.

Neanderthal man was the first prehistoric man to set foot on Earth. The technical name for human beings is homo sapiens. They are not two different types of people.

I think they were, and it was possible the two species could breed with each other.
My theory is that the are STILL ALIVE in most larger continents of the world.
They have been renamed in different parts of the world
They are:
The Australian yowie
The Himalayan snowman
The American Bigfoot.
The wild man of Borneo?
etc
These primates all have similar traits.
They have been driven into seclusion but the modernising homo sapiens.

the current scientific 'guess' is that they may have 'bounced' upon each other and there has been some competition between them.. however scientists are not in a position to tell us whether there were extensive clashes and all out wars between the two bipedal species or whether these fights were casual and more or less accidental due to occasional territorial interfences.

I think it was homo erectus and neandertal that lived together. The current theory is that homo erectus simply out gathered and out hunted neandertal. There is little evidence of interbreeding, and little evidence of warfare between them. They were a lot stronger than us, and probably our ancestors would have gotten their a**** kicked.

There is evidence in the Middle East that they did. They have found caves and settlements near each other which may even prove that they interacted with each other.

so it seems, to a degree, but others say neaderthals simply became homo sapiens, its a matter of conjecture since no one was there that can tell us.
