As terrible as this sounds, it would really depend on the community that you live in. Yes, there are americans who are prejudiced.. not just against Egyptians, but prejudiced against anyone who is not of their ethnic origins. However, there are communities that are not so closed minded where you could be very happy. Just as there is in the middle east with conflict arising between peoples of varying religious belief and ethnicities, so it is also in the U.S. This occurs, I believe, because of general lack of knowledge and people do tend to be afraid of what they do not know or understand and may be unwilling to learn about.

I would love to say that this type of behaviour does not exist, but it would not be true. Let me give you a few examples from my personal experience: I worked at a small community hospital in the midwest. We had a very nice, well respected physician who was middle eastern, and not a newcomer to this community. This small community (not the hospital staff) treated this man so rudely after the events of 9/11, that he left the facility and moved elsewhere where he and his family were more accepted. Later, I worked at a larger teaching hospital, where there was a relatively large number of doctors (residents) who were from middle eastern countries and they seemed not to be judged so unfairly.

I think the people who might be able to answer your question best, would be others of egyptian origin already living in the U.S. Depending on where they live, I'm sure their responses would be quite varied. If you have friends or family who are already in the U.S. I would seek their advice if I were you. If that is not an option for you and you are religious, I would search out a religious organization of your faith and find out how they feel about the way they are treated by the general community.

Larger cities might be more accepting than small rural communities, but I can't say that would be the case everywhere.

Good luck to you.

Nah, we like everybody. Maybe that's our problem, but it's a good problem to have.

There were some sticky moments for Middle Eastern immigrants after 9/11, but by and large Americans realize that we're all in this together, and we all basically want the same things in life: a place to live, clothes to wear, something to eat, a chance to make a living, someone to love, and the ability to do it all without interference from others.

Some of us do get cranky when folks come here illegally, so just do the paperwork and come on over.

Take it from me--affluent, well-educated Americans are generally ok with Egyptians. Everyone else would kill you for a dollar.
