Discovery channel did an excellent show on his life and death, as well as covering how dangerous a stingray is. Apparently, he died from his heart being punctured long before the poison could kill him.

As several have stated: The heart being stabbed was the fatal blow.
Since that accident many sting ray have been found dead along beaches there and they were killed out right with some missing the barbed end of their tails (cut off).
Rays aren't dangerous but humans are.

You can live through a sting from a sting ray, it's the fact that the barb went directly into Steve's heart. The fact that he pulled the barb out mixed w/ the poision right in his heart killed him nearly instantly.

Steve's critical weekness was that he required a hole-free heart to pump poisonless blood through his mighty croc annoying body. Once that pesky ole stingray rammed his tail barb through the man's heart and filled it with poison steve was in for the fight of his life.. or death.

They are very poisonous, but Steve died because it stabbed him in the heart. The poison is not as deadly as many many other things in the ocean.
Man, the ocean's a creepy place!

On tv people said that stingrays barely ever kill people. I think what killed Steve Irwin was more of a freak accident than anything.

They said on the news that he was more likely to be struck by lightning than have that happen. They are supposedly one of the less deadly animals in the ocean. It was truely a freak accident.

That was just a freak accident. They are poisonous, but can't really harm people.

It was an accident. The stingray probably thought that he was a Shark or his prey. I bless him and his family.
