Austin is the most fun for music and the outdoors. Houston is an international-class city and major port of entry into the US. You can find anything you want there. It is HUGE - read traffic problems, but can be very exciting. Sugarland is just a former bedroom community of Houston which has become totally engulfed by Houston. So, it's now just a neighborhood of Houston. Corpus Christi is smallest of the three, on the coast (could be a real plus). I would assume that life might be a bit slower there, which I would personally prefer.
I lived in the Big H for 35 years. I saw it increase in size from 350,000 to 3,500,000. I hear it tops 5 million, today. If that's your bag, go for it! Hope this helps.

Do Austin as first choice, then Corpus; avoid Houston.
Austin is a very mellow, laid-back, friendly city, whether or not you are a liberal. It's a beautiful, well-landscaped, historical place with so many fun attractions, such as SoCo, Sixth Street, Town Lake, Zilker Park, Barton Springs, Mount Bonnell, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the State Capitol, Bob Bullock Texas History Museum, bicycle trails (making Austin great for outdoors), UT football, basketball, and baseball games, great BBQ joints, the Round Rock Express, could I go on? It's a metropolitan area of 1.5 million and growing very rapidly, so expect a lot of traffic congestion. The cost of living is comparable to Dallas if not more expensive, making it the most expensive area in Texas. Nevertheless, it's still a great city!
Corpus is smaller--only about 500,000 in the metro--but more laid-back. The Gulf beaches aren't much to rave about, but if you go north of the city to the Aransas Pass National Wildlife Refuge, they have some beautiful beachfront scenery. They still have things such as the Texas State Aquarium, minor league baseball, and the USS Lexington. A pretty safe city!
Houston isn't bad, it's just that the traffic is awful. When you factor in the suburbs, it's about 90 miles wide east-to-west and 100 miles long north-to-south. It's by all means a metropolis.
Good luck!

If it were me I would pick Austin. I have lived in Houston for 8 years only moving out in 2005. I will never move back to the Houston area. But that is my opinion. I also lived in Dallas for 13 years and would move back to Dallas. I have never lived in Austin, but it was one of the places we considered when we were moving. Austin is more outdoorsy, and more laid back and easy going than Houston. It is also in the 'Texas Hill Country' which is rolling beautiful scenery. Houston is on a flat(as a pancake) plain barely above sea level, with bayous and nothing interesting geographically around it. And the Beach at Galveston is not worth writing about. Austin is a bit more expensive, but not a lot more. Austin still has a lot going for it even though it is a much smaller town. The college scene does also keep the town livelier..

If you like the beach then Corpus Christi is okay. But other than that it realy isn't that great. It's a very small town and there is not much to do at all.
Houston as far as culture is the best of them all. Houston has many, many places to visit and explore. There are tons of things to do in Houston. Austin is in the Texas Hill Country so it is hilly and lots of woods. You can go hiking and riding on the hike and bike trail along Town Lake. Which is the Colorado River through Austin. You can go swimming and hang out at Lake Travis. You can drive through the Texas hill country which is really beautiful with lots of hills and cliffs and country side.
Austin does not have as much to do as Houston though and can get boring pretty fast. If you live in Houston it is very easy to cruise to Austin to visit for the weekend. Austin is a very liberal town and some of the people are really weird and not very street smart. They are kind of naive about real life. There are lots of college kids in Austin because of the University of Texas and they party on Sixth street every weekend. Sixth Street is a long street of bars and clubs and it closes off on the weekends and everyone walks down it to different bars. Kind of a mini Bourbon Street. Sugar Land is a suburb of Houston and is really, really nice. It's one of the fastest growing areas in the United States because everyone wants to live there. If I had to pick I would pick Sugarland because you will live in a nice area with everything you need. You will basically be in the area of Houston so you have the Houston Ballet, the Houston Symphony, Reliant Stadium for Pro Football, Minutemade Park for Pro Baseball, musuems and art gallaries, Galveston is about 45 minutes away if you want to go to the beach. Any store you can think of for shopping. Lots of live bands and places to hang out. The schools in Sugarland are very good. Sugarland is just an alround better place to be. There are tons of parks to go for hike and bike trails and nature. You can drive just 30 minutes and be out in the Texas countryside with rolling fields, trees and farmland. You wouldn't even know you where that close to the 4th largest city in the nation. I would narrow it down to Sugarland or Austin. But if you want to live in Houston there are some really nice areas there too. But Sugarland is a nicer suburb. I would choose Sugarland and just visit Austin sometimes.
