Precisely, where are going to? There are striking differences between North and South.
And what are you coming for? Business? Vacations?
Basic advice: pick some Portuguese; be careful with your money; don´t go out alone in a big city; dress casually (don´t try to look like a tourist); be patient; be prepared for the heat; trust only people you know or whom you have been referred to; keep away from too spicy food; let the US embassy or consulate know that you are around. Etc.
