look in the fashion mags and see what you like. then shop at the stores you can afford to duplicate that look. they all will have a version of what is "hot".
For me, for social or business occasions, I buy classics, coach and dooney and bourke, they are expensive but I keep them forever, and some I get on ebay.
For casual, I love lesportsac, they are indestructible, have such cute prints, and cheap enough to get a new one every year.

What's affordable. QVC has some great bags by MAXX of NY , they run about $100.

i find the best bags at marshalls or ross if you have one near by. if you have time you could try bluefly.com if you have a little extra money to spend and really into bags but marshalls and ross usually have prior season bags at great prices!!
