Are men who have an obsession with weapons actually more dangerous then those with an interest only?

Should we be scared of men who collect guns?

Frankly they scare the hell out of me. I can see if you are someone who goes to a shooting club as a recreational thing. I have 1 pistol that I keep in a locked box and I wouldnt even have that but I am getting up in years and I do live alone. It has been said that this may be a way for some men to make up for some defeciencies that they may have and this is a way to make them feel more manly. I used to know a guy who was obsessed with guns and hunting. This guy is older than me but now he has a little trophy wife who is about 35 years younger than him and whenever I see them together she just has this look kinda like, how the hell did I get myself into this crap. Some men like fast cars, some are forever chasing women, some collect guns like they have to prove to the world that I am all man. They are usually very unpredictable and always seem to be carrying this underlying anger and that is the part that scares me. I feel like they could go off at any time.

An unnatural obsession yes, collectors no.
I own alot of guns, I also live in a rural and mountainous area that holds a population of that probably has a gun ownership rate of 70% or more. Almost every friend I have owns at lest one gun and most more than one. Alot of the women also own guns. NO ONE has shot anyone else in all the years I have lived there. Not once. We understand the danger of misusing a weapon. Just like the danger of misusing a car. It then becomes a dangerous weapon. Ask anyone that has been hit by a drunk driver.
Ted Bundy, Jack the Ripper, The Boston Strangler, Gacey, Shawcross, Gein, Dahmer, etc.. etc.. They didn't use guns. It's
the mindset of the person. They will find a weapon if they are determined to kill. It is the mindset we have to fix. If I am determined to commit murder why would I care about the weapons violations?

Well, when someone is obsessed with guns it scares me yes.

My step-son is thirteen and for the past 3 years or so, he'll vault into a conversation about guns and shooting people. He talks about all sorts of blood and gore. It bothers me and I try to gently help him understand that it's not acceptable to be excited about things like that.

Now he is not my child and I know that his mother allows him to play all sorts of video games and watch movies that are above the rating for a child his age. She doesn't like guns either but still allows him to fantasize through the media he has access to.

He goes into an almost hypnotic state when he talks about firing guns and how it must feel etc... Again it freaks me out.

On the other hand he's a really nice kid and wouldn't hurt even a moth. He loves animals and gets really upset if he sees someone harassing a handicapped person. He's great with is old granny and is a very well behaved kid.

It's just his fascination with guns - I don't get it.

He went clay pigeon shooting last week with his friend, and his friends dad. He got to shoot the gun and he even hit a few clays.

I think it was good because he saw that it's a sport - and it took the gun out of the video realm and into a place where it is used properly. For sport - not against anything alive. I do think this is good for him.

But to answer your question - yes I do think it frightening when people are fascinated with guns and even collect them. It suggests they are extremely insecure and are trying to protect themselves against something. Whether they feel powerless in their lives or a victim of something they don't understand.

Collecting them must mean they want them nearby in case they need to use them.

It really depends on why they want to collect the weapons. If it would because they felt a connection or liked the appearance then they may be dangerous. If they collecting to honour a friend who died in battle or something then...I guess it would be ok. But I don't think they should actually go COLLECTING them. It's just a very unsettling thought for people around them.

Obsessive behavior with weapons? Sounds like a dangerous situation to me. Know anyone? Get that person some help or report him to the authorities. I don't want to tell you about my own personal experience but... well, do what you think is right and remember that you'll have to live with your own conscience.

Since I see no men standing up for me I will defend myself.

I collect handguns, rifles, machine guns, swords, axes, and other assorted pointy things. Now also I have never been in a fight with another man or woman for that fact. I have never resorted to violence in my entire life. But I do enjoy the fact that I could blow a hole in my neighbors forehead if he lets his dog poop on my yard one more time....lolz!
