i think england will surge these next 3 to 4 years,they will become a serious contender & i predict it will be ITALY VS ENGLAND in the final in w/c 2010.

romanis-you make pretty good sense,except i dont agree with your last paragraph,i'd say they're "just a compilation on paper of certain facts."

Rankings are just a compilation on paper of certain stats. For example, in tennis, players need to be ranked, in order to seed them, to ensure the best players only meet each other in latter rounds.
It only serves as a guide, in the end, you still have got to go out and justify that rankings by winning something.
FIFA rankings are a necessary evil to seed teams for major events, and to help in the movement of players in various leagues, by serving as a guide in permit application.
In short the more games your team plays and win, the higher their ranking.
Rankings however do no translate into anything significant beyond that, you still have to go and prove yourselves on the pitch.
Italy was outside the top 10 in the World Cup but still won the trophy.
So don't pay too much attention to the FIFA rankings.
However, I see no reason wrong in Brazil and France being in the top 2, if you put all their results together over the past 2 years.
Brazil despite finishing in the top 8, have the Confed and S.American title to their name, whereas France finished 2nd but have had a series of strong results lately, their current form justifying their high ranking.

YES!!!!!!!!!!I WILL START SUPPORTING OUR ENGLISH TEAM WHEN THEY GET BETTR. They have already made inroads-they have dumped Becham. Am happy. England will definetely improve. But I think its gonna be FRANCE VS ARGENTINA in the 2010 wc finals. But this time England will make the semis.
Yeah, Brazil is World No. 1. Italy dropped 3 places to 5.

They are a bloddy disgrace and a joke. After Australia made the round of 16 (and nearly the quarter finals), Australia rose to 38. Wat a joke. Why are teams that didnt make the world cup (eg egypt) still ranked higher than us. Bloddy joke.
