It depends on your type of file, but except all comments above, another way can have you is use program: Folder Assess 2.1 (Contact me to give you this software if you need). With it, you simply put your file to a folder and then right click on this folder to set pass word for it. And do the same when you want to open it. Good luck!

If microsoft office related documents, you can set password through application itself..

if other than microsoft office files like picture, movie, mp3 and others, you can use WinZip or RAR compressing utilties with password

if you are using windows domain system, you can set permission setting for each folder or files for particular user.

otherwise, use FolderGuard to apply password on particular folder.

which is easier for you ?

Right click the desktop goto new then compress folder, or zip
Open it and drag your stuff in there,
Goto file then add password, set one,
and then whenever you want to open anything you'll have to use the password.
That's the only way i think you can do it in windows without downloading anything :)
have a good one

properly in case you're utilising NTFS report format on your abode windows Xp then you relatively could desire to create folders that are no longer accessible under one person. i'm not sure in case you may set a password for one particular folder or report. yet you're able to do some thing like a particular folder isn't accessible from one person account.

You can zip it and password protect it like kylenstevo said.
Depending on your file-type and the programs you are using, certain programs have the option in "tools-options-security" where you can password-protect your file.
