there is no right answer to this question. for myself, there's a good reason why my favorite is FFIV
-------
i really like FFA on gameboy. but it's not a true final fantasy, it's a seiken densetsu

i didn't get into FFLs on gameboy. from what i understand, that's not a true FF either, it became saga frontiers or something

FFI on nes was great, but had no reason whatsoever for why your guys were involved in saving the world. also, you had to talk to people to figure out where to go, the right people didn't come to you and talk to you, you had to FIND them! (example: when you get the rosetta stone.)

FFIV on snes was the first game i played that i figured everything out on my own without having to resort to asking my cousin. (i didn't have the internet - although i'm sure Al Gore made it by then... heh) i didn't know that the mage/coctrice/bomb/imp summons were so hard to get, because i had them all on my first run-through

FFIV on snes was also rather good. not as good as four, but that's probably ONLY because i had a guide that i resorted to when i got stuck. guides become crutches that destroy good games.

FFVII on PS was the first in a major downfall of the franchise. it didn't have a new system, like each of the previous games, instead, it just rehashed the magic system from VI. it had no storyline for the characters. sure, there was a story about the earth spirit named sephiroth, but no one knew who cloud was. no one knew who marlene was, for all they knew, barret was a pedaphile. perhaps he was her father. the point is, NO ONE KNOWS, there are no backstories. also, people cry because aeris died. i don't remember people crying when in IV the five or six year old twins tried to commit suicide (and you thought they succeeded until most of the way through the game). also, because of the materia system, the only things that made anybody different from anyone else were the limit breaks. (limits were introduced by shadow in VI, btw, but were involuntary)

FFTactics was done well enough, we even found out the staff at square is on first hand terms with the grim reaper (they know his name is Rich)

FFVIII i rather liked, but as soon as you get access to the whole world and all the quests to get all the GFs, well, you pretty much stop caring how much further into the game you get. also, enemies leveling with you was a neat idea.

FFIX was decent enough, but it's hard to care about any of the characters besides vivi. and the end boss? what?

FFX had a neat battle system, but like with VII, they took away the classes. which makes EVERY character a carbon copy of EVERY OTHER character.

FFTacticsA was done well enough.. but the story was geared towards 4-9 year olds. children that could not get the full use of the battle mechanics

Tough choice between III (VI) and VII.

Final Fantasy III (known as VI elsewhere) isn't as well written as the other FF games but it had so many characters in the game, each with their own side story and advantage in battle. Kefka could go down as one of the best villians ever in an RPG and the music is just classic. Highly recommended and good luck finding it cheap, even for the SNES version.

Final Fantasy VII may end up going down as the best FF game ever. It's the first one to land on Playstation and it's graghics were top-notch for it's time. The enemies were great looking, the summons were entertaining, the spells were well done, and the music was yet again classic. The characters always end up being the top reason people fell in love with VII. Cloud is one of the greatest heros ever in an RPG while Sephiroth is one of the greatest villians of all-time.

So it's a tough choice between those two for me.

Final Fantasy VII of course, I think it has the best storyline ever in the final fantasy series, and it has more to tell, and also it is the first Final Fantasy with 3D, ^w^.

Perhaps it is also Square Enix favorite Final Fantasy. This can explain by the number of compilation they've release in Final Fantasy VII

- Final Fantasy VII (PC/PS1)
- Final Fantasy VII Advent Children (Movie)
- Final Fantasy VII Before Crisis (Panasonic FOMA P900iv)
- Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core (PSP)
- Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
- Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus: Lost Episode (Mobile Phone, perhaps is Panasonic FOMA P900iv)
- Final Fantasy VII Last Order (Animation)
- Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega (Ultimate guide of Final Fantasy VII)
- On the Way to a Smile (Novel)

Final Fantasy VII. It's the only Final Fantasy where I was completely sucked into the story and the world and I liked most of the characters. The others I've played, I lose interest about thirty hours in. Plus... Sephiroth. I rest my case.

Final Fantasy 4. It's was a great, challengeing RPG before all this ridiculous, melodramatic crap started in the series.
