Normally the Captain is called as Captain only. But at times he is called as a Skipper similar to Captain of the Ship is called as Skipper by the crew.

Skipper means master of ship. Skipper = shipper = scipper (from middle dutch). Unlike football or other sports, the cricket team captain has to act like the ship captain. The ship captain has to act and order crews according to condition of sea, wether and wind. The cricket team captain has to act and order his team mates according to condition of pitch, field etc...
That`s why the cricket team captain called as skipper.

On ships, the captain of the ship is often reffered to as The Skipper, by his crew. It's a slang term.
So, it's just been transfered from Captains of ships, to Captains of sporting teams, including cricket teams.

Well I don't know of any cricket captain called skipper.Every national team chief is known as captain.Perhaps in indivdual countries he is referred to as skipper,but he is the captain
