You should look into both avenues of traditional publishing and self-publishing (e-publishing too!) to see what will work for you.

Keep in mind, that traditional publishing is a lot harder to get into than self-publishing is, or e-publishing for that matter.

And it's more into the business of book selling and profits, than the art of writing a really good novel.

I self-published my daughter's book. These are some issues I have- the price people have to pay- it's in full color (great text and images- it's an ABC book) so the price is spendier than an ABC book at your local bookstore- being that the softcover does not have the title on the spine, a lot of local booksellers will not carry it.
However, I am looking for an agent as I want it to go through a regular publishing house. We also have a few more books and loads of ideas- on and off paper! plus we are going to a writer's conference next month. That is a good place to meet people in the book business.

I think it's best to start by looking for an agent and a traditional publishing house. If you have a movie scripted from the book, an agent can market it properly. If you self-publish, there is less of a chance that anything will ever come from it.

For me, going to those writing seminars was a great idea. They are expensive, but part of the perks are meetings with publishers. You also can take informative classes. The key is to get the list of who is going to be there ahead of time and to research all of the participants to find the ones that publish books like yours. Then you must get there early and sign up for the openings with them. Good Luck.

If you're considering a vanity press, I think you're insane.

If you have no options, e-book might be one.
