we just got my 10 yr old a guinea pig for her B Day and she adores her new pet. Yesterday After she had been carring the pig around and holding it near ehr face I noticed what looks to be hives on my daughter. I asked her if it was iching at all and she said no. I have never heard of some one being allergic to guinea pigs before.
BTW The "hives " left almost as quickly as they appeared and my daughter has shown no other signs of illness or allergy symptoms

She could definitely have an allergy to the guinea pig's dander or hair. You might want to also consider the bedding as a possible factor.
My source has some interesting info you can check out too. :)

I am allergic to guinea pigs. I had a severe allergy attack to mine, my eyes swelled shut and I couldn't breathe. I had to get rid of mine, but I have recently found a product called Allerpet, you rub it on the animal and it reduces dander and takes away the oils which are what causes the allergies, even in hairless cats. I found it online, make sure you get one that is suitable for small animals not just dogs or cats. We used to use it on our ferret. Hope this helped.

It could be the piggie dander or dust from the bedding. I'm allergic to both but I got testd and take shots once a month and take a small pill every day and have no problems with either now.

Your daughter could very well be allergic to her guinea pigs fur. it certainly sounds like it. you might be better off concidering a chinchilla instead. Many people who are allergic to cat and dog hair as well as guinea pigs find that they are perfectly fine with chinchillas

see if she in the future has any similar reactins to the ginuea pig if so wash the ginuea pig with dog shampoo because there may be something on the ginuea pigs fur.

to tell you it happened to my brother when he got a ginuea pig dont bath the ginuea pig on a cool or cold day and have the water on ly like 2 cm.

Well it's always possible to be allergic to any type of animal. What I would do is bathe him.and dry him so he doesn't catch a chill.. Also look for lice eggs in his fur.

They catch that easy. I bought one got him home and he was covered in it..yick, I took him back because I was not going to be the one to get rid of it (the lice).. But if he has lice, that could of irritated her skin..
