The countries in the world in the world with the least killing, have Social Democracy, and are also among the most prosperous countries in the world. Social Democracy strongly reduces the conditions that lead to the popularity of killing. The countries in the world with the most killing are Capitalist Republics, with bourgeoisie democracy or state capitalism. The main cause of killing, is ignorance and poverty, both of which are neglected in Capitalist Republics. Most Capitalist Republics are progresively embracing the principles of Social Democracy. The course of human social evolution is toward Social Democracy.
Many militarist countries of the past have become pacifist as they progressively embraced the principles of Social Democracy.

The basic reason why people do anything is because they can! Once they've done whatever shouldn't have been done either morally or rationally, they bring up intellectualizations, rationalizations and justifications to make it appear as if there really was no other choice. We all do that, not strictly in murder cases, but it is a common trait we bring up and about whenever this serves our own purpose of survival - either in a direct sense or in more metaphorical ways.
If we all explored the matter of respect more and applied that to whatever we do, we could end up living in a world where death only came by either natural cause or accident. For now we still live in this place where the most despicable of human behavior gets intellectualized, rationalized and to some extent even systemized. Therefore intellectualism is no guarantee for a more humane behavior of humans, the balance rather flips the scale negatively due to intellectualism. Though we can't tell what stone age people would have done if they would have had our modern weapons of mass destruction to their disposal. Had that been the case we would either sit here and be glad that humanity has had its most violent episode, or we wouldn't be here at all! I am not very familiar with the moral behavior of those of the stone age. The closest glimpse we get of the behavior of stone age people is that of those living traditional lives in Papoea New Guinea. Their fierce wars result in one or two deaths occasionally, which could be due to the lesser efficiency of their weapons or maybe that after all they have a more humane moral than we can account for. In these intellectual times we are the ones who have things that are called smart bombs!

People are divided in so many ways. In the name of religion, countries where people are permitted/ encouraged to kill in the name of religion and country. People are killed even for selfish needs of strong nation Vs weak nation. The killings are going on only the reasons are different. With more development the methods are more devastating and cruel.
Whether there will be a day when thses are stopped is left to imagination.

In genocide, we are worse than animals. No animal species kill another animal from its own species. No lion kills another lion. So does a tiger or any other wild animal. In fact, many animal lovers and celebrated hunters like Jim Corbett have corroborated the fact that no animal kill a man wantonly unless they feel threatened. Even when they kill their prey, they do so when they need food and not for sport. Genocide is unique among mankind. Psychologists are puzzled over this trait in man. Perhaps, had he remained an animal and did not evolve into homo sapiens, man would not be killing another man.

Um. For the same reasons actually. Ancient man killed for resources that support their survival, individual or his tribe. Our society has evolved to incorporate resources that cave men have not learned to use but the effect is still there, to preserve man's survival.
And it is spelled intellectual for the guy that is correcting you in the first post.

maybe we kill so much now because it is an intellectual time. it is a time of ideas and ideology. how many wars are fought over ideas? all that i can think of. even if the root cause is material, the war is still dressed up in the language of ideology, and this gives it a moral justification. wars that have moral justifications behind them (even false ones) are much easier to convince people to fight than are acts of brute force.

Man is a combination of body, mind, intellect and soul/spirit. We have evolved from the body to the mind-intellect level. But we are still fragmented from each other as we think we are seperate beings with separate wants which may often lead us to have conflicts. Till we evolve to the stage of the spirit/ soul where all is one and one is all, the fights are bound to be there.

First, there are still mindless sheeps and walking zombies.
Also, it is one thing to think and an entirely different thing to think too much.
Then, there are those extreme heartless thoughts of "I'm better than you" and "over my dead body".
Can we handle the truth?
