I've read about this a couple of years ago in a local tabloid but I've only seen the picture just earlier in Wikipedia! Is that true or another hoax? I can't find any article about it in the net!

There may or may not have been a race of sea creatures called mermaids in the past. but no one has seen any recently . a species of fish has been called by scientists as the basis for mermaids..
Isn't it strange that every time someone finds something like this it just happens to escape just before the people come to verify the existence of it.

There is a girl that was born in some country with a syndrome called Mermaid Syndrome her legs were fused together and it looked like a mermaid tail. I don't think it was Malaysia though. I saw this on Discovery Health Channel.

It is probably this in peru. tabloids take a little truth and twist it to sell.

LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - A Peruvian baby dubbed the "Little Mermaid" because of a rare birth defect in which her legs are fused, is making good progress after initial surgery to prepare her legs for separation, her doctor said on Monday.

"She's doing great, she's brilliant," Luis Rubio told Reuters after 9-month-old Milagros Cerron began oxygen therapy on Sunday to help her wounds heal.

Doctors have inserted three silicone bags between her legs to stretch the skin to prepare for an operation next month to begin separating her legs -- one of only a handful of times the risky procedure has been attempted. She will have a second operation three months later to divide her legs as far as her pelvis.

Milagros -- whose name means "miracles" in Spanish -- was born with "mermaid syndrome," or sirenomelia, a condition that is about as rare as conjoined twins but nearly always fatal.

You possibly heard about the"mermaid" girl, who is a perfectly human baby who was born with her two legs joined together. She just had an operation and the legs were detached from one another and she is not a mermaid anymore!
