think back to the 60's,70's. With the war,slayings,hurricanes,9/11,ect. do you think we are "going to hell in a hand basket," or are we still going forward? Backward? what are your thoughts? I heard a song called " i wish i were a punk rocker " about a person who wishes she were back in simpler, less violent, times. Do you think we are "done for" as a society?

Not all over the world, but in the U.S., yes, you have become dominated by the system. You don't protest about anything. Remember Vietnam and how youth took the streets to stop the war? Nothing like that is going on now. Everyone's too busy buying stuff, consuming. Marx was right. The object takes over the person. The person is overwhelmed by the objects he creates, you're trapped in an eternal cycle of materialism, you live to produce and to buy newer products. You guys have to learn from South American countries, or France for example, where people stand up to the Government and don't believe all the crap they say, and fight on the streets to prevent unfair laws from passing, or in your case, invasions in countries abroad taking place.

I may be cynical at times--esp. as a Sociologist by trade--but I'd really hate to think that we, as a society, are done for. I think there still is a bit of a "revolution" attitude that exists--hence the emerging of such films as The Matrix and V for Vendetta, along with other examples from recent pop culture. However, in comparison to the 60s and 70s, it seems that people are less inclined to hold as many revolts. I'm not exactly sure why that is. The spirit and idea of revolution is still there, although a bit diluted and perhaps not burning as passionately as it was 30 to 40 years ago, sadly enough.

No. There has always been conflict in society.Think about the 60's. The country was divided by the Viet Nam war. College students were killed by soldiers. There were race riots in Los Angeles, New York and New Jersey. A president, a presidential candidate and the two best known black civil rights leaders were assassinated. They were not idyllic times, but we survived and we will always survive.

I wish I was still a bit more optimistic but it seems like people are just too damn complacent anymore. When anyone does try to speak out or do something they are labeled as crazy liberals and no one listens to them anymore. This stuff freaks me out because it seems the debate we do have is leading us no where. I think as a society we are stagnant. Hopefully something good will get us going again like a change in leadership.

I think that we are in our last fifty years as a great democracy. The excessive rights to entitlement that are taking over our society is just nonsense. Our generation doesn't know what it's like to be without, therefor we will not fight for it. How I hear is biotching about everything. WE HAVE IT MADE, and don't even know it.
