A cable modem CAN generally be faster than DSL at this time. However, you share your cable connection with several of your neighbors. This means if several other people in your area are also online, you can see your cable modem speed drop dramatically. I can usually get really fast speeds on my cable modem in the afternoon and late at night. On the other hand, during peak usage hours(9-11am and 6-9pm) I have sometimes seen my connection slow down to dial-up speeds! DSL on the other hand, while it might be slower than cable sometimes is not a shared resource, which means the speed will always be constant no matter what is going on around you.

Cable, although i believe that cable is a type of dsl connection. Cable dsl will be faster then dsl through a phone line. I have had both, and cable is BY FAR better! Cable is more expensive though, so if you are only going to be using it for e-mail, you could get dsl through a phone company (not dial up) and you won't be able to tell a difference. I even played games on my phone DSL connection online (wow, city of heroes) and didn't have problems with lagging much. Hope that helps!

Well I suppose you could get a t3 at 45 Mbps but it will cost you big time! Why not just get one dsl and one cable connection and split your traffic over each. It will also give you some redundancy in case one or the other service quits.

i feel cable is faster than dsl. the next step would be having a T1 or if you really want fast a T3 line. those are very expensive and not very practical.

Currently DSL has about 6mbits/sec as max. Cable in my area has 4mbits as max.
However DSL performance drops by the distance so if you are not near a CO, then cable may be your answer.
