Let x= the number, therefore;

3x+1= 2x+4
(subtract 2x from both sides of the equation)
1x+1=4
(now subtract 1 from both sides)
Therefore, 1x=3 or simply, x=3

Now test it yourself. Go back to the original equation and substitute the number 3 for X and see if it fits. Good luck!
