Yea. The parentheses mean to do what's inside them first. And this problem is easy all you have to do is add the two together and carry the sign.

the parenthesis is a way to indicate a negative number. the expression is simplified as follows
-1 * (4+8) - using the parenthesis there as a grouping symbol, do the addition first, then the multiplication. When you multiply by a negative one, you simply invert the sign in front of the number...if it starts positive, it ends up negative, if it starts negative, it ends up positive.

The answer to that problem is -12.

-4-8=-(4+8)=-12
