Do not condemn him. Try to understand him. We all indulge in self eulogising talks some time. There are occasions when you need to display yourself, not necessarily out of a sense of vanity and vain glory. You put yourself on a defencive mode, lest the other person takes you for some body and no body. Boasting is a kind of a battle cry. You seem to say to the other person ," you see, I am no push over. Don't try to wag your tail, here".
As long as such bragging is harmless, ignore or enjoy it. If it is really a nuisance, and no longer amusing, pull him down. But, personally would like to beat a retreat from him.

People who usually boast about themselves have such a low self esteems that they constantly have to brag so they can feel better, you will also find these people tend to be very critical towards others. I will suggest let the bragging slip in at one ear and out at the other. Feel sorry for this person, don't get angry

give him/her great feedback
that's terrific! wow, you're brilliant! you did excellent, man! you are the guy!
be sincere
it is good for your soul to allow others to feel great
a boasting person has fear that he is not alright, has doubts about himself, is trying to shield himself from fear and doubt - help him/her do this and watch them bloom
and they will stop boasting when their confidence in themselves is restored
and they will treasure you

They are lacking something thast why they use th etalk for a fill. Not much you can do besides wonder when you get aturn to speak. And wonder at their reaction when you tell them positive about yourself.
