If you are working full time and over the age of 21, living on your own, it's important to take a look at what you NEED and what you WANT. We've been sold a bill of goods that says we MUST have a new car, spiffy wardrobe and drink expensive wine when out to dinner with someone we want to impress.

On the other hand, if you are interested in living within your means, you take a legal pad and on one side of the page write down your monthly income. On the other you start with essential payments:
rent/housepayment
food expenses
insurance
utilities
gas for your car
These are necessities.

Then, depending on your job and interests:
wardrobe
entertainment
and other secondary things you may want.

By taking the first ten percent of your net income and putting it in a retirement/401K/savings account and then comparing your NEEDS to your remaining income, you have an idea how to spend the remainder.

If your cash flow out is more than your income, you need to take a serious look at how you can function like this. Credit is great for a car payment or a house. Extending yourself for non essentials can land you in trouble.

Good luck.

Divide your major expenses by your pay period (weekly, fortnightly) and have a seperate account for this money to pay your bills, some banks or credit unions will do this for you. Be reasonable with yourself - allow yourself some money for the things you love maybe just less frequently. If you cut your budget too tight it is doomed to failure. Any little amount you can put away is saving - even your loose change wil add up.

You can make a list of your bills and other expenses and figure about how much your going to need for each one. Then set aside enough money for those things. Then make a food list and take it with you. Only buy what you need and its best too try to get the best deals on things. Some stores our outrageous on things. ( You can use excel on the computer to help you)
Never buy anything you don't need unless you can afford it. What ever money you have left over put it in the bank and let it draw interest while you keep adding to it.

Girl when you find a good answer, please let me know. (LOL) I think when you should only spend money on the necessity and when you want to by a pair of shoes; stop and think about what that money can go towards, then put in your saving account if you have one if not open one up. Know it time for me to take my on advise because it hard for me to save money too but I know it can be done. Wishing you the best in your quest to save as well as for me.

It is not that much difficult task! Just look to your last month unnecessary expenses, count it, then when you get your salary this month, take this amount which you decide it was unnecessary spent last moth, keep it in you saving account, better in deferent currency, Euro for example.
Good luck.
