The best thing about Americans is that they're never afraid to express their opinions.

The worst thing about Americans is they never listen to and respect other people's opinions!

not considering the present state of the President's popularity.
Generally, Americans pursue truth and nothing but the truth.
This endeavor is the basis of the technological advancment of USA. The truth is that in the capitalist society - for your utmost wellbeing you need to acquire Money Power Fame. So
they pursue Power, Money, and do ruthlessly, all attempts towards this are considered just, even if you have to kill Iraqi's.

I think the idea is that the winner is worshipped because it is he who will guarantee the survival of human being inthe coming mellinea!!! ( Personally I am at cross roads with this idea)

The problem is that it is too much individualized and sometimes too selfish.
You can marry several times as long as you marry one at a time. You can be a homosexual and demand to work in a conservative minded office. You can accumulate billions of Dollars and be the whole sole owner of all the money. Not possible in India where whole extended families stick together on small matters such as who a 21 year old heir to millions is going to marry !!!

As a human being you can kill the Japanese, Vietnamese or Iraqis just for your well being. That to me is nothing less than Hitler.

Saddam killed the minorities of his own kingdom to keep peace which USA has not been able to achieve where as the numbers killed are greater than during the rule of Saddam.

Like it or not all other societies - mainly China and India are molding themselves more around the American culture than the English / European / Japanese / French or German culture. It is scary.

As said before, I am at cross roads with this attitude.
I think there should be a neo American Culture where Indvidual success is not worshipped and valued as much. And people are more willing to share and live in harmony around the globe. May be the Internet will help us achieve this.

Best thing about America - The Blues.
Best thing about the American people - They want to do what's right.
Worst thing about America - The political/industrial complex run by the families of ex-gangsters and robber-barons. Close second, it's racism (1700's, 1800's, 1900's and 2000's).
Worst thing about the American people - their blind acceptance of anything hidden behind patriotism.

PS. These comments encompass all that America is, not just what it is now temporarily.

In my opinion the best thing about America is that it's one of the few countries that reach out to others who have been hurt from natural disasters. The American government always helps out in some way to aide others. Now the people ...we are all from different backgrounds different cultures but live together in the USA..some of us respect the laws and regulations and others don't care and do as they please so these are the worst of us. Some are lazy and want handouts..while others work hard to supply the money it takes to care for the ones who can't care for themselves...we have many problems but we also have many good qualities too.., too many to list....in closing the President does not make our government operate it's the senators and congressmen and women who sit in Washington DC and are supposed to work for all of us. We have the right to vote them in or out of office that is where we fail not getting out and voting...so no one should complain if they are not enjoying the freedom of voting for our officials of our country.

BEST: We are very creative and inventive people. We are constantly coming up with new fads, clothing styles, and lingo, which catch on in the rest of the world very quickly. Also, we love to have fun and joke around. Just come and hang out with us at any American bar or club sometime and you'll see what I mean.

WORST: We sometimes forget there is a whole other world beyond our borders. But if you ever come here to spend some time you would understand why. Why have so much land, resources and so much else at our fingertips that it makes it easy to forget about the world around us.

ok, just so you know where I'm coming from
I'm english, and an ex seafarer who visited the states a lot
I have "chat" contact to an american lady

Best? - The average American that I met was always very open and friendly, and honest

Worst? - The average American abroad makes a very poor advert for their country, loud, arrogant. I've met Americans in Korea, and they didn't really know where they were, just that they were "somewhere in the pacific ocean"

To sum it up, I guess the "average" American isn't much different to the average Brit, German or Russian
We're all people, and we all have good/bad traits

Wasn't it one of your presidents who said "you can please all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time" ?

Have actually met very few Americans, most of my perception comes from tv and movies, although on a train journey in Canada met some execs from Budweiser who were the nicest people. Not really able to understand this 'war on terror' but sad American lives are being lost in far flung places - not like you are just defending your kin is it?

Best:
Most of them dont care how you live you're life(as long as you live in the US)
----------------------------------
Worst:

Obnoxious patriotism
Its ok to patriotic, but waving the flag in everyones face, saying stuff like "the best place on earth", "the greatest nation" etc, telling others how to live, and worst of all, the stupid president with his "God Bless America" even when in other countries, is a bit too much.

Materialism

Oh, and they're obsession with security. No one is ever completely safe, so get over it and stop destroying other countries.
--------------------------
And I see you're going to have a hard time deciding on the bet answer ;-)

The not-so-good thing abt americans:huge inputs and huge outputs. The best thing probably is their love of music. And the president doesn't have to reflect on his people, the same way Bill Clinton doesn't have to reflect on American men when he had a scandal with Monica Lewinsky.

Their patriotism is their best attribute, but their arrogance, their ability to be blinkered over world events over shadows this. I love the country, but most of the population need to travel to find out what the rest of the world thinks of them and then maybe - just maybe their would understand how the rest of the world views them.
