"A" is a no because you can't heat the air. also, if you consider the volume of the earth atmosphere, at a very large volume even pure gaseous substances can be heated over and over since it will only continuosly going to expand
"B" is again wrong pure and mixture gases can be compressed in a smaller volume
"C" is a HUGE NO
"D" is the best answer... your asking of a mixture, then its composition must variable, i.e. it varies from one composition to another. in addition, air contains different concentration of different gases.

in this question, the choices are relatively swallow.. choosing "D" is full of doubt, but among the choices it was the best one to pick
